Military Widows on the Farm

This spring and summer we had the honor of hosting Military Widows and Gold Star Mothers for Healing Hope Retreats here on the farm. Women arrived from near and far carrying so much, and left a little lighter, a little more rooted, and wrapped in friendships that we know are going to last long after they drove back down the mountain. What happened in that arena and around that bonfire will stay with us for a long time.

These retreats exist because grief and loss do not have a finish line. Because the women who love and support our military and have lost the most, deserve a place that was built specifically for them. Not a program they have to translate their experience for. A place where they walk in and are already known.

Four days on this farm does something that is hard to explain until you have felt it. The land, the horses, the mountains, the community of women who share the same story without having to say a word of it out loud. Together these things create the conditions for real healing. Not the kind you perform. The kind that actually changes something.

We watch it happen every single retreat. Women who arrived guarded leave open. Women who had not laughed in a long time find themselves laughing until they cry. Women who felt invisible for years walk out of the arena knowing they were seen, by the horses, by each other, and by themselves.

They go home with new tools for the hard seasons ahead. With handmade things created by their own hands as reminders of what they are capable of. And with the knowledge that there is a community of women out there who understand exactly what they carry, because they carry it too.

One participant said it best at our closing circle: I did not know I could feel this much and still be standing.

That is what this place does. That is why we do this work.
