Healing Programs for
Veteran and Gold Star Families
SERVS
Series of Equine Retreats for
Veteran Spouses
The Program is guided by SLP’s trained staff, a social worker and our specially trained Healing Herd of Horses. SLP is based on the foundation that healing and growth can come from nature, from seeing something bigger than ourselves. SERVS takes place outside in nature focused on non-riding, trust-building activities. Each session promotes a variety of mental health and wellness practices, coping skills and support. SLP believes deep connection and ongoing support is key to providing healthy, happy, purpose-filled lives. These sessions are intimate, only allowing up to 10 participants. By keeping the sessions intimate, deep connection is established, which creates a greater lasting impact.

V.E.T.
Veterans Exploring Together
Each month, veterans come together with their brothers and sisters in arms to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Western North Carolina—hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, climbing, rafting, and more. But it’s not just about the adventure—it’s about reconnecting with a sense of purpose, camaraderie, and inner strength. As they move through nature side by side, veterans share stories, offer support, and talk about everything under the moon.
Countless studies have shown that time spent in nature and regular physical activity—like hiking—can reduce symptoms of PTSD, improve mental health, and increase overall well-being. Through this program, participants report lower stress levels, improved sleep, renewed motivation, and most importantly, a deep sense of connection to others who understand the unique challenges of life after service.

Healing Hope Retreats for
Gold Star Families
Our Healing Hope Retreats offer a compassionate space for Gold Star Families to rest, reconnect, and begin to heal in the peaceful embrace of nature. These all-inclusive retreats bring together parents, spouses, and children of fallen service members for four days of reflection, support, and shared experience. Through equine-assisted learning, outdoor adventures, creative workshops, and meaningful connection with others who understand their journey, families find a renewed sense of hope and belonging. These retreats are more than just a getaway—they are a lifeline for those navigating unimaginable grief, a reminder that they are not alone, and a tribute to the lives and legacies of their loved ones.

Mini Acts of Kindness
With the help of our miniature horse partners, the MAK program is able to reach those who are especially vulnerable to isolation and loneliness. Many studies have proven that animal interaction boosts mood, reduces loneliness, can lower heart rate, and reduce stress. The novelty of the use of equines allows the MAK program to draw in more individuals as they instill curiosity and playfulness in the participants.
